1 year of business: what I have learnt

I launched D’Ubaldi Marketing last year, on November 6th, 2020. In this period, I have learnt a lot by being my own boss and conducting my own business. This experience has been amazing but challenging at the same time. Now that I can sit back and reflect upon this last year, I have identified a few key things that I have learnt and think it’s important to share.

1. CLARITY IS EVERYTHING

This is true for my clients, but also for myself. It can be applied in the beginning stages of a business, but also in the long run. It is very easy to lose focus along the way, especially when one is excited about their project and have a million and one ideas they want to execute and goals they want to achieve. The key to keep on track with all of this is to stop and take the necessary time to refocus, without comparing yourself too much to other people’s journeys.

2. SETTING BOUNDARIES

To “be your own boss” is not limited to making all the decisions by yourself, but also to take charge and be firm with those you work for. Setting boundaries is extremely important. You cannot let your clients be the boss of you, and your business either. Take charge and make decisions knowing your limits and what is possible for you to achieve.

3. TAKE A BREAK

Taking a break is also very important, and it is ok to take a minute to yourself occasionally. We are all humans, and there are more important things than work in life. Mental and physical health should be priorities and knowing when you need to put your work aside to focus on yourself is essential. If you would take care of your team, why wouldn’t you care for yourself too?

4. LEARN FROM OTHERS BUT KNOW YOURSELF

Another important lesson learnt in this first year as an independent businesswoman is that you never stop learning. Learn from others; always! Don’t let any experience go by without taking something from it. But remember that, ultimately, you know your situation better than anyone else. Do not let other people’s opinions or dreams get in the way of what is really important, and what you really need.

5. NEVER STOP DREAMING

Lastly, this year I had to remind myself several times to never stop dreaming. There were difficult times I had to overcome and times where I felt like I was never going to achieve what I set out to do. Doubts about my every choice grew with every new challenge that came my way. But I did not give up. If you can’t see how far you still need to go, just think of how far you want to be. Let your dreams be your inspiration, and your purpose motivate you in every step of the way. If you know you’re made for more, go get it.
